The Godfather of Medicine in the UAE

A national tribute to service, care and legacy. In memory of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this initiative pays tribute to a leader whose lifelong commitment to public health, education and scientific advancement left an enduring mark on the United Arab Emirates and beyond. Promoted by Balsam Group for Healthcare Development and Balsam Academy for Medical Education & Research, in collaboration with the Emirates Cancer Society, the initiative is launched in alignment with the UAE’s Year of Community 2025.

Why this tribute?

To honour a vision that placed human dignity at the centre of healthcare. To remember a legacy that empowered generations of doctors, educators and researchers. To inspire new forms of social and scientific engagement rooted in care, ethics and equity.

Objectives

• Preserve and disseminate the humanitarian legacy of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum
• Connect national memory with the future of responsible medical innovation
• Support health-related initiatives aligned with his values of service and inclusion
• Encourage civic participation and ethical leadership in healthcare

Associated activities

• A dedicated tribute during the GHAITH 2025 summit closing ceremony
• A short documentary chronicling his contributions to health, science and philanthropy
• Launch of an honorary award bearing his name, conferred annually to individuals and institutions with a proven impact on health-related humanitarian work

The initiative will be formally presented in the presence of Sheikh Dr. Salem Balrukad Al Ameri, president of the Emirates Cancer Society, along with partners, civil society representatives and international guests.
